The Australian Standard for grab rails, in plain English

AS 1428.1 is the Australian Standard for access and mobility. The 2021 edition is referenced by the National Construction Code (check the current NCC edition for adoption status in Victoria), which makes it the reference point for accessible bathrooms in Australia. Below are the numbers that matter for grab rails, paraphrased in plain English.

The rail itself

  • Diameter: 30-40 mm. Smaller feels flimsy; larger is hard to grip.
  • Finish: anti-slip. Knurled, powder-coated or peened, not polished.
  • Material: stainless steel, nylon-coated, or powder-coated steel. Australian-made rails dominate the market (Home Handrails, Canterbury Concepts "studreach", Bendtech "Home Assist"); imported rails must meet AS/NZS.

Clearance

50-60 mm between rail and wall. A hand needs to fit all the way around.

Load

  • The standard works to a rail withstanding 1,100 N from any direction at any point along its length.
  • Minimum 110 kg load.

Heights

  • Horizontal toilet rail: 800-810 mm above finished floor.
  • Horizontal toilet rail extension: at least 450 mm forward of the front of the toilet pan.
  • Horizontal shower rail: 800-810 mm above the finished shower floor.
  • Horizontal shower rail length: at least 1,200 mm across the main shower wall.
  • Vertical rails (step-in / entry): position depends on the user; AS 1428.1 allows clinical judgement. The OT's scope of works specifies exact position for funded jobs.

Wall reinforcement (the NDIS builders' guidance)

The NDIS Home Modifications Guidance for Builders and Designers calls for fixings into noggings, studs, wall trimmers, or at least 12 mm structural plywood. If none of those are present, the wall has to be opened and reinforced before the rail goes in. That work is quoted separately.
