What a grab rail installation actually costs

We try to be upfront about pricing. Here's how it works.

Every grab rail job is a bit different: the wall type, the rail you need, how many rails, and whether it's funded all move the final number around. Below are honest ballparks so you're not guessing. For an exact price, email us and we'll come back within one business day.

Private / self-funded

JobTypical rangeNotes
Single rail (stud fix) $250-$310 Standard 450-900 mm rail. Timber-stud bathroom wall.
Single rail (masonry fix) A bit more than a stud fix Brick or concrete wall. Extra anchors and drilling time.
Single rail (fiberglass / tile over ply) Get in touch Usually needs wall reinforcement (noggings or 12 mm structural ply). Priced after inspection.
Whole-bathroom package (3-5 rails) From around $650 Best value per rail. Covers shower, bath or shower entry, toilet.
Outdoor step / entry rail Get in touch Depends on post fixing and footings.
Custom-length or angled rail Get in touch Priced to the specific rail supplied.

Industry ballpark across VIC, NSW and TAS is typically $200-$400 per installed rail. The ranges above sit inside that. The installer's written quote will show the GST treatment that applies to your job (NDIS-funded grab-rail work is typically GST-free).

What a quote normally includes

  • Site walkthrough with you (or a family member on the phone).
  • The rail (Australian-made where possible; imported rails meet AS/NZS).
  • Fixings rated for the rail load (AS 1428.1-2021 works to 110 kg / 1,100 N).
  • Rails checked solid before the installer leaves.
  • Clean-up and rubbish removal.
  • The installer's workmanship warranty (confirmed on the quote).

What isn't included (unless listed on the quote)

  • Wall reinforcement beyond simple noggings if a stud isn't where the rail should be.
  • Tile repair if a rail is coming out (the installer works around tiles where possible; damage is rare but possible on old grout lines).
  • Travel outside Melbourne, within 50 km of the CBD.

Funded jobs (NDIS, My Aged Care, SWEP, TAC, WorkSafe, DVA)

For funded work, the OT writes a scope of works and the installer quotes against it. Scope-based quoting is the standard across the industry: it lets the funder assess a single cost for the specific prescription, and it protects you from surprise gap fees.

How to get a funded quote

  1. Your OT writes the scope of works (position, rail type, height, number of rails).
  2. You (or your Support Coordinator) email the scope to rob@grabsafe.com.au.
  3. We pass it to our partner installer, who aims to return a written quote within 1-2 business days.
  4. Your funder (NDIS plan manager, My Aged Care provider, SWEP, TAC, WorkSafe, DVA) authorises.
  5. The installer installs.

How funded jobs are handled

  • The aim is no surprise gap fees. If the funded amount doesn't cover the quoted price, you should be told before any work starts, so you can choose to cover the difference, adjust the scope, or decline. Upgrades you choose (for example a custom finish) are itemised on the quote.
  • The installer quotes and fits to the OT's scope. We ask that any on-the-day issue (wall condition, stud position, user feedback) is raised with you and the OT before anything changes.
  • Completion and any deviations are reported back to the OT in writing.

Funding quick reference

Figures last checked July 2026. Confirm current caps with the scheme.

  • NDIS: grab rails fall under minor home modifications. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can go ahead today. NDIA-managed plans need an NDIS-registered provider, which our installer isn't: see our funding guide.
  • CHSP (My Aged Care): up to A$15,000 per financial year for home modifications, renamed home adjustments from 1 July 2025 (source).
  • Support at Home (My Aged Care): grab rails are funded through the tiered Assistive Technology and Home Modifications scheme; the high tier is A$15,000, with more available where assessed needs require it (source).
  • SWEP (Victoria): statewide equipment program for eligible Victorians not on NDIS.
  • TAC / WorkSafe Victoria / DVA: covered as part of rehabilitation.

Frequently asked pricing questions

Why don't you publish an exact flat price?

Because it'd be wrong for about half of jobs: wall type, access, and rail choice each move the number. We'd rather give you an honest ballpark up front, then have the installer commit to an exact written quote before starting, than quote a flat rate and surprise you on the day.

Will you match a cheaper quote?

If you've got a cheaper written quote from an insured installer with a comparable warranty, send it through. If the installer can meet it, they will; if they can't, we'll explain why.

How do I pay?

You pay the installer directly against their invoice: bank transfer, card, or direct invoicing to your plan manager or funder. Payment options are confirmed on the quote.
